‘RRR’ (2022) – Pre-Interval Sequence VFX Breakdown by ReDefine

SPOILER ALERT: I cannot believe I’m saying this but if you have not seen the film, what are you even doing. Go. Go watch it right now. RRR on Zee5 (original language available), RRR on Disney+Hotstar (original language available), RRR on Netflix (only dubbed version available).

The most awaited vfx breakdown from RRR (apart from Bheem’s introduction sequence*) is finally here! And I’d say it was worth the wait.

ReDefine worked on most of the animal shots except for a few tiger shots in this sequence (which were done by Alzahra VFX). A few shots at the beginning (truck breaking the entrance) and the later part of the sequence and up until the intermission was done by Makuta VFX (watch Makuta’s breakdown of the sequence). The truck ramming through until the cover over the truck is removed is done by Digital Domain (watch DD’s breakdown).

If someone from Redefine sees this, I’d love to chat about vfx and how you got involved in the film and about your stereo conversion etc. Please email or DM me on Twitter. Thank you!

@ThisisReDefine it looks like you forgot to render the tiger in the last shot of the breakdown.

Fun Fact: ReDefine also did the stereo conversion of the movie.

A Sad Fun Fact: I got the only surprise in this movie (keyframe of the “beings” coming out of the truck part) spoilt by some rando on twitter the morning of the movie’s release on March 25th. I was so frustrated with twitter and myself. Twitter for showing it to me (because it said, “you might be interested in this” and just put the picture in front of me) and me for opening Twitter that morning.

*which is yet to arrive but I doubt MPC will ever release the breakdown. For now, we’ll just have to make do with the before and afters released by the overall visual effects supervisor, V Srinivas Mohan here. Thank you, sir!
